DPS16-PCIe is a turnkey solution ideal for synchronized sampling on multiple digitizers with +/- 10 picosecond accuracy. It consists of an industrial PC bundled with a 16-slot PCIe expansion chassis together with ADQ3-series digitizers. Adding one extra expansion chassis achieves 32 slots and up to 64 measurement channels. DPS16-PCIe uses third-party hardware that has been tested for maximum performance with the digitizers. The systems are configured, assembled, and tested in-house based on customer requirements.
Block diagram showing example configuration
Host PCThe host PC serves as the central hub for system-level configuration, control, data processing, and analysis. It receives data from digitizers and/or other processing/storage units installed in the expansion chassis. The system uses two cabled host connections to transfer data from the expansion chassis, and a single host PC can support a total of 32 slots and up to 64 measurement channels. The Digitizer Studio software streamlines system operation by offering stand-alone configuration, measurement, and display capabilities via a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI). Alternatively, users can also employ custom software for complete customization to fit specific application needs and preferences. Digitizer Studio and user-developed software can run on Windows or Linux, and either operating system can be pre-installed prior to delivery. |

Expansion chassisDPS16-PCIe utilize either PCIe Gen3 x16 or Gen4 x16 expansion chassis that support 28 Gbyte/s or 56 Gbyte/s system-level transfer rate respectively to the host PC. The allocated transfer rate can be adjusted up to 14 Gbyte/s per slot, while the system-level transfer rate imposes an upper limit across all 16 slots. In many applications, it is common to mix digitizers and graphics processing units (GPUs) for post-processing and/or solid-state disks (SSDs) for high-speed storage. Data transfers between units residing in the expansion chassis utilize so-called peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming, which allows for direct transfers with little or no involvement/burden on the CPU and RAM of the host PC. The total P2P direct streaming rate between digitizers and GPUs/SSDs can exceed the system-level transfer rate to the host PC. For example, multiple digitizers can stream at 14 Gbyte/s each to several GPUs at an aggregate rate of for example 84 Gbyte/s, while the combined transfer rate from these GPUs to the host PC is maximum 28 or 56 Gbyte/s depending on chassis model. Also, onboard FPGA pre-processing combined with potential GPU post-processing helps reduce the transferred data rate in order to respect system-level data link capacity |

ADQ3-series digitizersTeledyne SP Devices’ ADQ3-series digitizers are high-performance, 12-bit digitizers designed for demanding applications requiring high-speed data acquisition. These digitizers offer sampling rates up to 10 GSPS and feature an open FPGA for custom real-time signal processing. With built-in peer-to-peer streaming to GPUs at up to 14 Gbyte/s, they are optimized for OEM integration and support applications such as fusion reactor plasma temperature and density measurements using Thompson scattering, beam control in particle accelerators, phased-array radar systems, and more. The ADQ3-series also includes advanced firmware options and a user-friendly interface for efficient data collection and analysis. Note that DPS16-PCIe is incompatible with ADQ36 since it is only available in PXIe form factor. |
